Medical Qualifications
Professor Tom Bourne qualified with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1984 (MBBS). He went on to complete his PhD on the early detection of ovarian and endometrial carcinoma in 1996 at the University of Goteborg, Sweden. Following this he certified as a Fellow of Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecology in 2003.
Medical Experience
Prof Bourne is an international authority on both the practical “hands-on”, and the academic applications of the use of ultrasound in gynaecology and early pregnancy problems. He was appointed as a Reader in Acute Gynaecology and Gynaecological Ultrasound in 2005 at St George’s, University of London before moving to Imperial College NHS Trust.
Currently Prof Bourne is a Consultant Gynaecologist at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust, London, and is available to see private patients at the Lister Hospital, London. Alongside this he is a visiting Professor for the Imperial College London and also a Professor for the Department of Gynaecology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. He is on the scientific committee and has been elected onto the Board of the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG), and is a medical advisor to the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust.
Prof Bourne specialises in early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound. His main areas of interest are the use of ultrasound to obtain accurate diagnosis of patients including the assessment of ovarian or endometrial problems. He has a focus on early pregnancy problems such as bleeding, pain, miscarriage or ectopic pregnancies.
