Medical Qualifications

Mr John Yap qualified from Glasgow University before going on to undertake further training in general surgery. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, in 1992. Following this Mr Yap received his MD (Doctorate of Medicine) for a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, USA for his pioneering research in gene therapy.

Medical Experience

Mr Yap is Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and the lead surgeon for the major aortic programme at The Heart Hospital, University College London Hospitals. He is also co-founder of London Heart Specialists, Harley Street Clinic.

He specialises in the surgical and endovascular treatment of valvular heart disease, Marfan syndrome and diseases of the thoracic aorta (such as aortic dissection and aneurysms).

    The healthy heart has a number of valves which prevent the blood from flowing backwards. Normally these delicate structures, which are made of thin flexible and durable tissue, work efficiently over the 2000 million heart beats that occur during the course of our lives. When you consider this statistic it is not surprising that on occasions the heart valves can begin to fail. This can occur in one of two ways. Firstly, and most commonly, the valve tissue can become narrowed or stenosed. Alternatively the valves can begin to leak. This is known as regurgitation or incompetence.
