Medical Qualifications
Dr Matthew Banks undertook a Bachelor of Science degree at The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1990 and qualified from University College Hospital, London in 1992. He was awarded a PhD in intestinal physiology in 2004 and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2008.
Medical Experience
Dr Banks is a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the British Medical Association. He pioneered the technique of complex endoscopic resection of early gastric, oesophageal and colonic cancer/pre-cancer. This procedure, known as endoscopic submucosal dissection, was developed in Japan, where Dr Banks undertook training in 2007 and he brought this technique to the UK.
Dr Banks is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College London Hospital where he is also Director of Endoscopy and Honorary Senior Lecturer. He is available for private patients at the Lister Hospital, London.
He is an expert in the management of oesophageal and gastric diseases including acid reflux, Barrett’s dysplasia and cancer. He is an expert endoscopist and can perform complex resections of early cancers and pre-cancers. His other interests include bowel cancer screening, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), obesity and general gastrointestinal problems.
