Medical Qualifications
Professor Caplin qualified with a BSc (Hons) from the University of Sheffield in 1983 and followed this in 1987 with a Bachelor of Medicine from Southampton University Medical School. In 1992 Prof Caplin received Membership of the Royal College Physicians prior to being awarded Fellowship of the College in 2001. He also received his higher Doctor of Medicine for gastrointestinal research in 2001.
Medical Experience and Training
Prof Caplin has a special interest in general gastroenterology, upper and lower gastrointestinal tract endoscopy, peptic ulcer disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, coeliac disease and abnormal liver function. He is internationally renowned in the field of intestinal cancers including neuroendocrine tumours.
He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute Upper G.I. Cancer committee and chairman of the National Cancer Research Institute Neuroendocrine Tumour group. He is immediate past chairman of the UK & Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society and is chairman-elect of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society. He has a large research programme investigating the effect of intestinal hormones on the gut, as well as new therapies for neuroendocrine tumours and Hepatic-Pancreatic-Biliary tumours. Prof Caplin is currently the NHS clinical lead for the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) Evidence for Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases.
Since 2009 Prof Caplin has been Professor of Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Neuroendocrinology at the Royal Free Hospital, London and the University College London Medical School. He is available to treat patients at the Wellington Hospital, London.
