Medical Qualifications
Mr James McCourtney graduated in 1988 from the University of Glasgow Medical School before receiving his MD (Medical Doctor) from the University of Glasgow in 1998. Mr McCourtney carried out his surgical training in Glasgow, western Scotland and London. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, General Surgery alongside being a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
Medical Experience
Mr McCourtney has a specialist interest in colorectal cancer (surgery and screening), rectal bleeding, diverticular disease, ileoanal pouch surgery and surgery for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
In 1996 Mr McCourtney was awarded the British Journal of Surgery Prize at the Tripartite Colorectal meeting in London for his work on small bowel pharmacology and ileoanal pouch surgery. This award was followed by his research group receiving a prize at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland for their techniques for diagnosing terminal ileal intubation.
In 2007 Mr McCourtney began Scotland’s first full-time private colorectal surgeon at the Scottish Colorectal Institute in Glasgow where he currently treats patients.
