Medical Qualifications
Dr David West qualified with MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Chemistry) from the University of Leeds in 1979 before undertaking specialist training in interventional radiology at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital, London. He went on to undertake higher specialist training in endovenous laser treatment for varicose veins in USA-based hospitals.
Medical Experience
Dr West is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at University Hospital North Staffordshire and specialises in minimally invasive outpatient treatment for varicose veins. He was responsible for the development of Veincentre Ltd, one of the busiest interventional radiology centres in the UK.
Dr West feels that patients should be able to decide which treatment is appropriate for them and that they are given as much information as is available regarding their condition.

Varicose veins: Treatment options
The options for treatment of varicose veins are:
- Do nothing
- Compression stockings
- Foam sclerotherapy
- Endovenous heat ablation either RF (VNUS), or laser (EVLA)
- Surgery
Surgery is unnecessary nowadays and offers no advantage over RF or laser.
